POSSIBLE WAYS TO ESTABLISH A CONCEPTUAL AND FORMAL EQUIVALENCE OF TERMS BETWEEN ENGLISH AND PB

This study contains the main points analyzed in the dissertation work presented as a requirement to obtain UnB's degree of LIP linguistic master in 2010. The objective is to compare the conceptual and formal equivalence of terms in the area of agrarian sciences between two linguistic systems, that of English and Brazilian Portuguese (PB). The question "How does a term conform to target language of PB having English as a source language?" guide the study. In order to understand the delimited issue, it is necessary to include fundamental aspects, such as the massive influence of the English language in the writing of technical and scientific articles in PB, the use of language for specific purposes, understanding of the linguistic sign, aspects of translation and the problem of establishing equivalence between two languages as well as the intricate identification and assignment of the term status to a lexical unit. Some of the implications of this movement between the two languages mentioned are discussed, based on the theoretical assumptions of Faulstich's terminological variation (2002).
