Abstract

The article addresses the analysis of deaf identities using the theoretical and methodological framework of French semiotics, also known as discursive or Greimassian semiotics. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the various forms of identity present in the Brazilian deaf community. In the analysis, the importance of the category "difference versus disability" is highlighted as a semantic foundation for understanding the experiences lived by deaf individuals. Additionally, the fluidity of deaf identity is contemplated, recognizing that the process of identification for deaf subjects is continuous and can result in different positions over time. It is concluded that the semiotic approach enriches the analysis of deaf identities, allowing for the apprehension of multiple layers of meanings and shared senses within the worldview of the deaf community.
