THE VOICES OF DONA LÚCIA AND RAPIST IN 'O MEZ DA GRIPPE', BY VALÊNCIO XAVIER

Abstract

Starting from multiple textual and visual elements, Xavier also builds multiple narratives about the same historical event: the Spanish flu in Curitiba in 1918. This polyphony allows the reader to play a role in building its own comprehension not only about the work, but also about the  event itself. By analyzing from the perspective of historiographic metafiction, we understand that the dialogue between the reader and the multiple voices which constitute the novella defies his understanding of what is history and fiction. This article aims to analyze the narrative construction of a historical element from the two subjects’ voices: the lyricist, whose identity is not revealed through a poem, and Dona Lúcia, through excerpts from interviews. In order to develop this article, we ask for support on the following bibliographic sources: Goulart (2005), Hutcheon (1991), Jobim (2002) and Milreu (2011).
