Caroline Govari Nunes (Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos), Jonas Pilz (Universidade Federal Fluminense) & Thiago Pereira Alberto (Universidade Federal Fluminense)

Deadline: July 20, 2021

Dossier publication: December 2021

How to analyze and discuss the corporeity and performance perspectives of Elvis Presley, Poison Ivy, Lemmy Kilmister, Kate Bush and Kurt Cobain? What are the insights and views about feminine / feminism from the life and work of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Patti Smith, Rita Lee and Pitty? Where do the political dimensions on the lyrics of Pussy Riot, Bob Dylan, Charly Garcia, L7, Raul Seixas and Ratos de Porão link with their songwriters and performers? What does the performance of Jimi Hendrix, Ma Rainey, Phil Lynott, Bad Brains and Clemente tell us about ways of being black? In what ways do Cássia Eller, David Bowie, Laura Jane Grace, Joan Jett, Secos & Molhados and Little Richards articulate gender tension? How do recent or recovered manifestations and past alignments resignify biographies of musicians such as Courtney Love, Johnny Rotten, Lobão or Morrissey? What developments from the initiatives of U2, Alanis Morissette, Metallica and Radiohead about the role of the music industry are relevant today?

Remarkable presence of the global media and consumption landscape heavily connected to the recording industry as one of its main commodities, rock'n'roll at its transcultural dimensions, exhibits both historical and social impacts. It also means a shared-identity and principles of rock’n’roll lovers worldwide.  Vital key to the popularization of pop music since the 1950s, as part of the social and political behavior changes and agendas. As such as the new possibilities of artistic performances since then, it has been recreating itself as a living organism: rock’n’roll has split into many different subgenres: glam rock, hard rock, indie rock, boosted both musical and cultural movements such as punk rock, and took influence from soul music and funk.

As an attempt to form a compilation of researches in communication, music, history, sociology and other areas of Human and Social Sciences, the guest editor of the dossier “ESSE TAL DE ROQUE ENROW”: profiles that amplify the musical genre in its media, social, political and performance dimensions invites authors to submit papers that reflect, through a rock’n’roll artist (singular or collective), about the tensions, crossings, issues and transformations that they had lead or are still causing on social and cultural debates that go further the musical genre.

The CfP expects microanalytical looks of perception and sensitivity for certain aspects about the experiences of artists attached to gender, race, nationality, age, consumption issues. From the exclusive visibility of certain artists and their specific episodes (albums, songs, live shows, fashion, events, eras, statements, social movements leadership), the possibility to arrange a suggestive framework of analysis on the musical genre itself.

The aim is to enlighten possible protagonists of these arterial connections between the musical genre and the cultural resonances and subjective engagements that, literally, make the world roll, as part of rock’n’roll speeches and performances. Thus, the profile is suggested to focus the proposals on certain protagonists, as well as to enable the gathering of a corpus of objects that present a brief rock inventory in society from some of its actors.

The articles for the dossier must focus on a specific rock personality and argue about how the remarkable events or their lyrical and sonic works, their identities, performances or their careers stick to certain great issues.

Suggested topics include:

 - BIOGRAPHIES: exams that include historical facts (minority civil rights movements, sexual liberation, antiestablishment, conservatism), relating to memory (individual and social) and the experience of artists; cinebiographies (how they redefines understandings, the imaginary and affects; literary biographies (how they develop – or not – the figure of and of the protagonist, for example); identity formations and structures of feeling (how we can understand the experience of individuals and groups with social dispositions in a certain context);

 - PERFORMANCES: understanding the behavior of social actors in divergent situations; performance analysis as a way of getting to know, through the performances, the cultures, their theatricalities and corporealities; reflections about albums, tours, revivals, videoclips, concerts, social media;

 - MATERIALITIES: aesthetic experiences enhanced using technological and media elements; production of presence from the performance of a song, at musical events, among other possibilities; essays about disc covers, technical artifacts, object descriptions, clothing, musical instruments, etc.
